Got an old computer in the basement, collecting dust? Is there an old dial-up telephone packed away somewhere in the attic?
Maybe it’s time to do an early spring cleaning and rid the household of unused electronic equipment. This would be the perfect time because tomorrow the City of Evanston will hold an electronic recycling event from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at James Park, located at the corner of Oakton and Dodge in Evanston.
Volunteers will be on hand at the one-day event Saturday, March 14 to take unused items such as TVs, computers, telephones, printers, scanners, fax machines, cell phones, radios, calculators, VCRs, stereos, DVD and CD players and microwaves.
The items will be recycled by CRT Processing, located in Janesville, WI.
According to the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Americans own approximately 24 electronic products per household. Recycling used electronic equipment recovers resources for reuse and recycling, and also prevents hazardous components such as lead, cadmium and mercury from leaching out of landfills and polluting the environment.
Items that won’t be accepted for recycling include refrigerators, air conditioners, dehumidifiers, batteries, car parts, chemicals, light bulbs, hazardous waste, scrap metal or tires.
A valid driver’s license or current city sticker will be required. Only residents who live in the following cities may participate: Evanston, Arlington Heights, Barrington, Buffalo Grove, Elk Grove, Glencoe, Glenview, Hoffman Estates,Inverness, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Mount Prospect, Niles, Palatine, Park Ridge, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, Skokie, South Barrington, Wheeling, Wilmette and Winnetka.
