Forbes ranks Evanston in the top 25 cities to live well

aerial_businessNot long after BusinessWeek ranked Evanston one of the top 50 smaller cities for start-up businesses, Forbes magazine just ranked Evanston in the top 50 U.S. cities under 100,000 in which to live well.

The only Midwest town to make the list, Evanston ranked 18th, above cities such as Santa Fe, NM and Davis, Ca.

The criteria Forbes considered were the number of museums, parks, bars and restaurants and cultural institutions per capita, and “factors indicative of a favorable business environment. These include patents, venture capital funding, sole-proprietorships, start-ups and small businesses per capita.” Other factors included the quality of the work force, median income levels and commuting time.

Here’s what Forbes also wrote about Evanston:

Strongest categories: Evanston is home to Northwestern University, which adds to its dynamic, inventive environment. It’s also 13 miles from Chicago, home to world-class businesses. BLS-defined highly skilled workers represent 29% of the labor pool, and the town has $28 venture capital dollars per person.

Drawbacks: There aren’t that many start-ups in the nearby area (only 0.0024 per capita), which puts it solidly in the middle of towns measured.
