Evanston History Center now owns Dawes House

charlesdaweshouseThe Evanston History Center today has become the owner of the Charles Dawes House after year-long negotiations with Northwestern University.

Circuit Court Judge Kathleen M. Pantle  approved the transfer of ownership from Northwestern University to The Evanston History Center today.  Last year, Northwestern, citing fire hazards in the historic Dawes home, closed the history center, which has since reopened after repairs had been made.

The transfer of ownership includes funds from the Dawes Endowment, which Dawes established to care for the home and the collection stored there.  The university will continue to care for the records its holds that pertain to Dawes’ family and personal history as WWI Brigadier General and Vice President of the United States.

“We couldn’t be more pleased and excited about the way things have worked out,”  Marge Wold, president of the board of the Evanston History Center, said in a press release.  “This is truly an exciting time for EHC as we grow and change to take on the new responsibility of ownership of the Dawes House and develop new programs for an expanded role in our community. We thank the community for its support and say ‘stay tuned’ for all that is to come from EHC.”

The EHC research room re-opened in February 2009 and the house opened for tours in May 2009.  Currently the house is open for tours Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 1-4 pm.  The EHC research room is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday from 1-4 pm.  For more information about all the EHC offers see its website: www.evanstonhistorycenter.org or call (847) 475-3410.
