The Evanston City Council passed a green renovation amendment, part of the recently passed Green Building Ordinance.
The ordinance amendment requires building owners to either choose a third party certification process required for new construction such as a LEED certification or choose from a list of environmentally friendly options provided by the city.
The city’s list includes “27 options for improving stormwater management, water use, lighting, mechanical systems, building enclosure, material reuse and interior finishes.”
The number of options required depends on how large the building is. For example, an owner choosing to renovate a building with 5,000 square feet or less must choose three items from the list. For a building between 5,000-20,000, an owner must pick five options for the renovation project.
