Evanston home where bodies found under contract

An East Evanston home that made national headlines when the bodies of three dead siblings were found is under contract.

The home, 1216 Judson, went under contract on 11/23/2009 and is now pending and expected to close next month. The list price was $675,000, and it was on the market for only nine days.

Police found the bodies of Margaret Bernstorff’s brother and two sisters who had died of natural causes.  One of the sisters had died in the 1970s. When neighbors stopped seeing Margaret’s brother, Frank, she told them he had moved to Indiana with relatives.

The Bernstorff family had owned the home since the 1920s. Margaret now lives in a nearby nursing home.

None of the siblings ever married or had children. The Bernstorff family was very private and somewhat reclusive, neighbors said. Bernstorff’s father was a professor of German studies at Northwestern University.

Evanston Police Cmdr. Thomas Guenther told the media that Margaret was “lucid” when the bodies were discovered.

The home, built in 1890, had five bedrooms, two bathrooms and four fireplaces with approximately 2,054 square feet. The lot is 50 x 190. The home was sold as is. For more information, go to Crains.
