			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.evanstonnow.com/story/news/bill-smith/2010-01-11/live-city-council"></a>The Evanston City Council passed a green renovation amendment, part of the recently passed Green Building Ordinance.</p>
<p>The ordinance amendment requires building owners to either choose a third party certification process required for new construction such as a LEED certification or choose from a list of environmentally friendly options provided by the city.</p>
<p>The city&#8217;s list includes &#8220;27 options for improving stormwater management, water use, lighting, mechanical systems, building enclosure, material reuse and interior finishes.&#8221;</p>
<p>The number of options required depends on how large the building is. For example,  an owner choosing to renovate a building with 5,000 square feet or less must choose three items from the list.  For a building between 5,000-20,000, an owner must pick five options for the renovation project.</p>

<p>The free festival will be held from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. this Saturday at the Evanston Ecology Center - 2024 McCormick Blvd.</p>
<p>The festival will feature exhibits by nearly 75 green businesses and organizations, and a keynote speech by award-winning environmentalist  Howard Lerner who will talk about &#8221;creating Evanston&#8217;s green economy while solving global warming problems,&#8221; which is scheduled at noon.</p>
<p>For the kids, there will green activities, crafts and story-telling by &#8221;eco-musical&#8221; Parker in the Park, scheduled at 10:30 a.m.</p>
<p>Festival patrons can get hands-on experience in demonstrations &#8221;on an array of green activities,&#8221; including composting, rain barrel use, car sharing and driving a bio-fueled car.</p>
<p>Food and refreshments will be available as well as free rickshaw rides.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-645" title="green planet" src="http://evanstonhomesandcondos.files.wordpress.com/2009/06/green-planet.jpg?w=150&#038;h=146" alt="green planet" width="150" height="146" />The Evanston City Council Monday night unanimously rejected a proposed Green Building Ordinance that would have required from building owners a $50,000 deposit and LEED silver certification for any interior or exterior renovation of a commercial or multi-family building with more than 10,000 square feet.</p>
<p>Under the plan, building owners would have been required  to submit a $50,000 deposit to ensure they receive the LEED Silver certification for each renovation project.  If the certification could not be obtained, owners would risk losing the deposit, which would  be directed to a Sustainable Evanston Fund.</p>
<p>The proposed Green Building Ordinance was strongly opposed by the Evanston Chamber of Commerce and the North Shore Board of Realtors.  In a written statement after the Council vote,  Jonathan Perman, executive director of the Evanston Chamber of Commerce,  said the proposed ordinance &#8220;took a punitive approach&#8221; that sent a message: &#8220;We don&#8217;t trust you.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The ordinance, as written, would have placed an enormous burden upon the business and commercial building owners of Evanston and would have taken the city down a dangerous path of enforcement by security deposit,&#8221; Perman wrote.</p>
<p>The proposed Green Building Ordinance was passed by the Evanson Environment Board and supported by the Citizens for a Greener Evanston (CGE).</p>

<p>This documentary chronicles the journey a young couple take to find out &#8211;where does our electricity come from?  And it ends up answering the important question, &#8220;If we don&#8217;t use nuclear or coal, then what do we do?&#8221; </p>
<p>With occasional whimsical zest, the film shares how simple changes such as switching incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescents, using energy star appliances, installing adequate insulation and locating and sealing leaks in air duct systems can have significant results. These changes can result in hundreds of dollars saved on home energy annually, millions of dollars in savings for businesses and communities, as well as dramatically reduced carbon footprints.</p>
<p> “’Kilowatt Ours’ focuses on how ordinary citizens can take an active role in energy conservation and provides simple solutions that result in health, money and environment-saving measures,” said the film&#8217;s producer, Jeff Barrie. “Most viewers are shocked at the scope of the issue and even more so at the immediacy and simplicity of the solution – energy savings as an energy source.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-528" title="segway1" src="http://evanstonhomesandcondos.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/segway1.jpg?w=128&#038;h=85" alt="segway1" width="128" height="85" />Despite warnings that it will declare bankruptcy, GM has teamed up with Segway to build a two-wheeled electric urban car that will navigate easily through congested city traffic.</p>
<p>GM unleashed it&#8217;s prototype in Manahattan Monday &#8211; the PUMA -  Personal Urban Mobility and Accessibility. The two-seater PUMA runs on a lithium-ion battery and can drive 35 miles on a single charge. The PUMA tops out at a speed of 35 mph.</p>
<p>The urban car would be connected to a network through the use of GPS technology that supposedly would allow it to drive by itself. GM designers claim the PUMA would avoid obstacles and pedestrians and would never crash so therefore airbags are not required. </p>
<p>GM hopes to have the PUMA on the market by 2012. The cost is estimated to be less than 25-30 percent of a traditional car. The company is looking for an ideal college campus to test the product and capture a market.</p>
<p>Northwestern University would be ideal, located next to an urban-like downtown Evanston. And, users wouldn&#8217;t have to feed the meter 24 quarters just to park.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img class="alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-474" title="green-cup" src="http://evanstonhomesandcondos.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/green-cup.jpg?w=112&#038;h=96" alt="green-cup" width="112" height="96" />Would you stop taking a shower for a week, navigate through dark hallways and air dry your clothes to conserve water and energy?</p>
<p>Well, that&#8217;s what it took for some Northwestern students living in dorms to win the university&#8217;s <a href="http://media.www.dailynorthwestern.com/media/storage/paper853/news/2009/04/03/Campus/Green.House.Willard.Take.Green.Cup.Glory-3696437.shtml">4th annual Green Cup </a>- a six week competition between NU residences to conserve the most energy and water.</p>
<p>This year&#8217;s winners are students from the Group Residence for Environmental Engagement at Northwestern House (GREEN House), and the Willard Residential College dorm.</p>
<p>Students living in the Green House timed their showers, and one student, Matt Iseri,  refrained from showering an entire week.  Overall, the Green House managed to reduce water consumption by 70 percent during the competition.  </p>
<p>In a less radical approach in the Green competition, Willard students made small adjustments such as turning off lights and taking shorter showers. The Willard dorm reduced electricity by 30 percent and water by 2 percent. </p>
<p>The Green Cup is organized by the student groups, Students for Ecological and Environmental Outreach, Engineers for a Sustainable World and Environmental Campus Outreach.<br />
